The Yard - Claflin University

Claflin University has been Orangeburg's HBCU home since 1869, making it the oldest HBCU in South Carolina. The Panthers wear orange and maroon through a city that sits at the heart of South Carolina's Black educational history. Over 155 years of graduates have carried Claflin's commitment to faith, scholarship, and service out into the world.

Founded in 1869, Claflin has shaped South Carolina's Black community through generations of educators, ministers, community leaders, and professionals who came through Orangeburg and went out to build something. The Panthers have carried that legacy with consistency and conviction, and the school's commitment to service has never wavered over more than a century and a half.
