Lincoln University of Missouri carries one of the most powerful origin stories in HBCU history. Founded in 1866 by Black veterans of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry, this school was built by men who had just fought a war for the right to exist as free people and immediately turned around and built an institution for the education of those who came after them. The Blue Tigers carry navy and gold through Jefferson City as descendants of that founding act.
