South Carolina State University is the only public HBCU in South Carolina, founded in 1896 in Orangeburg. The Bulldogs carry garnet and blue through a city that has been one of the most important centers of South Carolina's Black educational and cultural life for over a century. Founded in 1896, SC State has produced educators, military officers, public servants, and professionals who have shaped South Carolina for over 125 years. Orangeburg is also the site of the Orangeburg Massacre of 1968, when three SC State students were killed during a civil rights protest. The school has carried that history with dignity and used it to reinforce its commitment to justice and scholarship.
